St. Mary Magdalene FOLLOWER OF JESUS, MODEL OF PENITENCE

Mary Magdalen was so called either from Magdala near Tiberias, on the west shore of Galilee, or possibly from a Talmudic expression meaning "curling women's hair," which the Talmud explains as of an adulteress.

In the New Testament she is mentioned among the women who accompanied Christ and ministered to Him (Luke 8:2-3), where it is also said that seven devils had been cast out of her (Mark 16:9). She is next named as standing at the foot of the cross (Mark 15:40; Matthew 27:56; John 19:25; Luke 23:49). She saw Christ laid in the tomb, and she was the first recorded witness of the Resurrection.

The Greek Fathers, as a whole, distinguish the three persons:

* the "sinner" of Luke 7:36-50;
* the sister of Martha and Lazarus, Luke 10:38-42 and John 11; and
* Mary Magdalen.

On the other hand most of the Latins hold that these three were one and the same. Protestant critics, however, believe there were two, if not three, distinct persons. It is impossible to demonstrate the identity of the three; but those commentators undoubtedly go too far who assert, as does Westcott (on John 11:1), "that the identity of Mary with Mary Magdalene is a mere conjecture supported by no direct evidence, and opposed to the general tenour of the gospels." It is the identification of Mary of Bethany with the "sinner" of Luke 7:37, which is most combatted by Protestants. It almost seems as if this reluctance to identify the "sinner" with the sister of Martha were due to a failure to grasp the full significance of the forgiveness of sin. The harmonizing tendencies of so many modern critics, too, are responsible for much of the existing confusion.

The first fact, mentioned in the Gospel relating to the question under discussion is the anointing of Christ's feet by a woman, a "sinner" in the city (Luke 7:37-50). This belongs to the Galilean ministry, it precedes the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand and the third Passover. Immediately afterwards St. Luke describes a missionary circuit in Galilee and tells us of the women who ministered to Christ, among them being "Mary who is called Magdalen, out of whom seven devils were gone forth" (Luke 8:2); but he does not tell us that she is to be identified with the "sinner" of the previous chapter. In 10:38-42, he tells us of Christ's visit to Martha and Mary "in a certain town"; it is impossible to identify this town, but it is clear from 9:53, that Christ had definitively left Galilee, and it is quite possible that this "town" was Bethany. This seems confirmed by the preceding parable of the good Samaritan, which must almost certainly have been spoken on the road between Jericho and Jerusalem. But here again we note that there is no suggestion of an identification of the three persons (the "sinner", Mary Magdalen, and Mary of Bethany), and if we had only St. Luke to guide us we should certainly have no grounds for so identifying them. St. John, however, clearly identifies Mary of Bethany with the woman who anointed Christ's feet (12; cf. Matthew 26 and Mark 14). It is remarkable that already in 11:2, St. John has spoken of Mary as "she that anointed the Lord's feet", he aleipsasa; It is commonly said that he refers to the subsequent anointing which he himself describes in 12:3-8; but it may be questioned whether he would have used he aleipsasa if another woman, and she a "sinner" in the city, had done the same. It is conceivable that St. John, just because he is writing so long after the event and at a time when Mary was dead, wishes to point out to us that she was really the same as the "sinner." In the same way St. Luke may have veiled her identity precisely because he did not wish to defame one who was yet living; he certainly does something similar in the case of St. Matthew whose identity with Levi the publican (5:7) he conceals.

If the foregoing argument holds good, Mary of Bethany and the "sinner" are one and the same. But an examination of St. John's Gospel makes it almost impossible to deny the identity of Mary of Bethany with Mary Magdalen. From St. John we learn the name of the "woman" who anointed Christ's feet previous to the last supper. We may remark here that it seems unnecessary to hold that because St. Matthew and St. Mark say "two days before the Passover", while St. John says "six days" there were, therefore, two distinct anointings following one another. St. John does not necessarily mean that the supper and the anointing took place six days before, but only that Christ came to Bethany six days before the Passover. At that supper, then, Mary received the glorious encomium, "she hath wrought a good work upon Me . . . in pouring this ointment upon My body she hath done it for My burial . . . wheresoever this Gospel shall be preached . . . that also which she hath done shall be told for a memory of her." Is it credible, in view of all this, that this Mary should have no place at the foot of the cross, nor at the tomb of Christ? Yet it is Mary Magdalen who, according to all the Evangelists, stood at the foot of the cross and assisted at the entombment and was the first recorded witness of the Resurrection. And while St. John calls her "Mary Magdalen" in 19:25, 20:1, and 20:18, he calls her simply "Mary" in 20:11 and 20:16.

In the view we have advocated the series of events forms a consistent whole; the "sinner" comes early in the ministry to seek for pardon; she is described immediately afterwards as Mary Magdalen "out of whom seven devils were gone forth"; shortly after, we find her "sitting at the Lord's feet and hearing His words." To the Catholic mind it all seems fitting and natural. At a later period Mary and Martha turn to "the Christ, the Son of the Living God", and He restores to them their brother Lazarus; a short time afterwards they make Him a supper and Mary once more repeats the act she had performed when a penitent. At the Passion she stands near by; she sees Him laid in the tomb; and she is the first witness of His Resurrection--excepting always His Mother, to whom He must needs have appeared first, though the New Testament is silent on this point. In our view, then, there were two anointings of Christ's feet--it should surely be no difficulty that St. Matthew and St. Mark speak of His head--the first (Luke 7) took place at a comparatively early date; the second, two days before the last Passover. But it was one and the same woman who performed this pious act on each occasion.

The Greek Church maintains that the saint retired to Ephesus with the Blessed Virgin and there died, that her relics were transferred to Constantinople in 886 and are there preserved. Gregory of Tours (De miraculis, I, xxx) supports the statement that she went to Ephesus. However, according to a French tradition , Mary, Lazarus, and some companions came to Marseilles and converted the whole of Provence. Magdalen is said to have retired to a hill, La Sainte-Baume, near by, where she gave herself up to a life of penance for thirty years. When the time of her death arrived she was carried by angels to Aix and into the oratory of St. Maximinus, where she received the viaticum; her body was then laid in an oratory constructed by St. Maximinus at Villa Lata, afterwards called St. Maximin. History is silent about these relics till 745, when according to the chronicler Sigebert, they were removed to Vézelay through fear of the Saracens. No record is preserved of their return, but in 1279, when Charles II, King of Naples, erected a convent at La Sainte-Baume for the Dominicans, the shrine was found intact, with an inscription stating why they were hidden. In 1600 the relics were placed in a sarcophagus sent by Clement VIII, the head being placed in a separate vessel. In 1814 the church of La Sainte-Baume, wrecked during the Revolution, was restored, and in 1822 the grotto was consecrated afresh. The head of the saint now lies there, where it has lain so long, and where it has been the center of so many pilgrimages.

The Three Hearts - St. Joseph's most Chaste heart - 1st Wednesday after Feast of the Sacred Heart

The apparitions of the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary are two of the most important theological developments in the past 400 years. Not only are these images incredibly important, they teach us so much about Jesus and Mary. As we celebrate Fathers Day this weekend let us look at a heart that is intimately tied with Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary - the Most Chaste of Heart of St. Joseph.


Back in 1994, a Brazilian university student named Edson Glauber received an apparition of Jesus and Mary. Our Lady appeared to him under the title of “Queen of the Rosary and Peace” and stressed the need for conversion, Mass, Confession, and penance. Edson’s mother, Maria, would receive apparitions, too. Jesus and Mary especially stressed the importance of devotion to the Most Chaste Heart of Joseph. These apparitions continued over the years when, in March of 1998, St. Joseph himself appeared to Edson. He appeared to Edson over the course of eight days during that month, speaking more about his Chaste Heart.


St. Joseph revealed what his Most Chaste Heart looked like. It is a heart set aflame with the love of God, with white lilies spread diagonally across it. These are St. Joseph’s words from the fourth apparition. “The Heavenly Father granted me the honor of representing him, in this world, to take care of his Divine and Beloved Son, Jesus Christ. My Heart was also surprised by so such dignity, I felt incapable and undeserving of such a great favor and benefit, but I put all in the hands of the Lord and, as his servant, I was ready to do his holy will….Because of this great grace and joy that God granted my Heart and, by such great mystery, I promise to intercede before him for those who come to me, honoring this Heart of mine.”


During the weekend of Father's Day and the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus let us honor St. Joseph, the man who raised and loved Jesus as God and his son. To celebrate and foster devotion to Saint Joseph’s Heart, he gave directions to pray to him on the first Wednesday of every month. St. Joseph also recommended the simple formula of one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be. There are multiple prayers to St. Joseph you can pray on the first Wednesday of every month.

Hail Joseph, Son of David, the just and the chaste,

Private revelation to Edson Glauber de Souza Coutinho

In the morning, while I was praying, St. Joseph appeared. He was very handsome and he showed me his Most Chaste Heart. He appeared while I was praying the [above] prayer (Hail Joseph), which I had been praying in his honor for some time. Looking at me with a warm smile, he gave me the following Message:

“Spread this prayer to the whole world. Through  this prayer God wishes my name to be more known and loved. He also wants to bestow a lot of graces  through it upon those who will honor me by praying it. Those who will pray this prayer will be given many graces from Heaven. Through it, I will be often invoked by the whole world, and I will be able, by my loved and honorable heart, to grant a lot of graces to  sinners who are in need of divine help. It is important that this prayer be made known to everyone. May it reach everywhere, so all people can enjoy the goodness of God through it. This is His Most Holy Will that I am revealing to you right now” (March 29, 2002).

I felt overwhelmed by God’s presence, and I understood many things which were revealed to my heart about this devotion and about my future life and my mission. I am not worthy to receive such wonderful graces, and I deeply thanked God to have been chosen to present the Most Chaste Heart of Saint Joseph to the entire world. Who am I for this mission? Nothing, but I want to continue to be nothing so that God can do everything. Therefore, I understood that there are six different ways to honor the Heart of St. Joseph:

2. The Feast of the Most Chaste Heart of St. Joseph, as requested by Jesus during the Apparition of 6/6/1997: “I wish the first Wednesday after the Feast of My Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary be the Feast of the Most Chaste Heart of Saint Joseph.”

3. The Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows and Seven Joys of St. Joseph, which now should be prayed with the prayer that St. Joseph gave during the Apparition  of  3/29/2002 , so that we are able to enjoy his intercession, begging his Most Holy and Mighty Name that makes all of hell tremble and disperses the demons, as Jesus revealed in an Apparition.

4. The  scapular of St. Joseph was revealed to Edson during two apparitions: on  7/14/2000, in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Aylesfort (England), in the  same  place where the Most Holy Virgin had appeared to St. Simon Stock showing him the Scapular; the second apparition took place on 7/16/2001, on the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Cannel, in Sciacca (AG, Sicily), Italy, on the 750th Anniversary of the delivery of the Scapular to St. Simon by Our Lady.

Scapular of Saint JosephThe Scapular is a sign of protection and devotion to the Heart of St. Joseph, who wants to lead us to God and to holiness, emphasizing his virtues of purity, obedience, silence and humility, and igniting the flame of faith and love for Jesus and for the Holy Virgin Mary. St. Joseph will protect those wearing the Scapular as his property and will bestow innumerable graces through his Chaste Heart upon those who will be tempted against purity, and will protect them against the attacks by the Devil and each evil spirit. Especially young people should wear this Scapular, as they are most attacked by the Devil. Parents should recommend it to their children, since St. Joseph offers his help and protection, as he guided and protected Jesus on earth.

5. The spreading of devotion to the Heart of St. Joseph, associated with good deeds of charity in favor of the most needy, especially of the sick and dying, as St. Joseph requested in his promises in March 1998.

6. First Wednesdays should be remembered as days of special graces where St. Joseph pours out torrents  of extraordinary graces upon all those who appeal to his intercession, honoring his Most Chaste Heart. Jesus himself promised that these faithful servants will enjoy great glory in Heaven which, on the other hand, will not be given to those who will  not honor  him  as He asked.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help feast day

The image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is an icon, painted on wood, and seems to have originated around the thirteenth century.  Traditionally, the image is also known as “Our Lady of Perpetual Succour.”  The icon (about 54 x 41.5 centimeters) depicts our Blessed Mother Mary, under the title “Mother of God,” holding the Child Jesus.  The Archangels Michael and Gabriel, hovering in the upper corners, hold the instruments of the Passion– St. Michael (in the left corner) holds the spear, the wine-soaked sponge, and the crown of thorns, and St. Gabriel (in the right corner) holds the cross and the nails.  The intent of the artist was to portray the Child Jesus contemplating the vision of His future Passion.  The anguish He feels is shown by the loss of one of His sandals.  Nevertheless, the icon also conveys the triumph of Christ over sin and death, symbolized by the golden background (a sign of the glory of the resurrection) and the manner in which the angels hold the instruments, i.e. like trophies gathered up from Calvary on Easter morning.

According to popular tradition, a merchant
acquired the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help from the island of Crete and had it shipped to Rome towards the end of the fifteenth century.  During the voyage, a terrible storm arose, threatening the lives of all on ship.  The passengers and crew prayed to our Blessed Mother, and were saved.
Once in Rome, the merchant, dying, ordered that the image should be displayed for public veneration.  His friend, who retained the image, received further instructions: in a dream to his little daughter, the Blessed Mother appeared and expressed the desire for the image to be venerated in a Church between the Basilicas of St. Mary Major and St. John Lateran in Rome.  The image, consequently, was housed at the Church of St. Matthew, and became known as “The Madonna of Saint Matthew.”  Pilgrims flocked to the church for the next three hundred years, and great graces were bestowed upon the faithful.
After Napoleon’s troops destroyed the Church of St. Matthew in 1812, the image was transferred to the Church of St. Mary in Posterula, and remained there for nearly forty years.  There, the image was neglected and forgotten.
By divine providence, the forgotten image was rediscovered.  In 1866, Blessed Pope Pius IX entrusted the image to the Redemptorists, who had just built the Church of St. Alphonsus, down the street from St. Mary Major.  As a boy, the Holy Father had prayed before the image in the Church of St. Matthew.  He ordered the public display and veneration of the image, and fixed the feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help as the Sunday before the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist.  In 1867, when the image was being carried in a solemn procession through the streets, a young child was cured, the first of many recorded miracles attributed to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

Prayer for Favors

Dear Mother of Perpetual Help from the cross Jesus gave you to us for our Mother. You are the kindest, the most loving of all mothers. Look tenderly on us your children  as we now ask you to help us in all our needs especially this one… (Pause and state your petitions) While you were on earth, dear Mother you willingly shared in the sufferings of your Son. Strengthened by your faith and confidence in the fatherly love of God you accepted the mysterious designs of His Will.  We too have our crosses and trials. Sometimes they almost crush us to the ground. Dearest Mother, share with us your abundant faith and confidence in God. Make us aware that God never ceases to love us; that He answers all our prayers in the way that is best for us.  Strengthen our hearts to carry the cross in the footsteps of your Divine Son. Help us to realize that he who shares the cross of Christ will certainly share His resurrection.  Dearest Mother, as we worry about our own problems let us not forget the needs of others. You always love others so much; help us to do the same.  Dearest Mother, help us to avoid sin which separates us from our heavenly Father and from one another. Full of trust in you, we place ourselves under the mantle of your maternal protection and confidently hope for your powerful help.

Immaculate Heart of Mary

Every year, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated 19 days after Pentecost Sunday, and the following day, the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Devotees pay homage and honor the “Twin Hearts” on the two successive days, by hearing Mass, saying the Rosary, going to confession, receiving communion, and performing spiritual acts of mercy.


Honoring the Immaculate Heart of Mary is honoring the Mother of God, recognizing her extraordinary holiness and the immense love and protection she bestowed on Jesus as His mother, and her sharing in her son’s redemptive suffering and death on the cross.

The devotional name Immaculate Heart of Mary refers to the interior life of the Virgin Mary, her joys and sorrows, her virtues and hidden perfections, and, above all, her love for God the Father, her maternal love for her son Jesus, and her compassionate love for all the faithful.

The five first Saturdays are a widespread Marian devotion; Catholics go to Confession, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and meditate for 15 minutes on the joyful, sorrowful, glorious, or luminous mystery of the Rosary. The Immaculate Heart promises, according to Catholic belief, that whoever would do this will be given at the hour of death the graces necessary for salvation.

Filipinos attach great significance to the devotion to the Blessed Mother, especially to her Immaculate Heart. They venerate her through many names – Immaculate Conception, Lady of Manaoag, Lady of the Snows, Virgin of Mt. Carmel, Miraculous Medal, Mother of Perpetual Help, Virgin of Antipolo, Ina Poong Bato, Mediatrix of all Graces, Queen of Peace, Lady of Guadalupe, and Lady of Lourdes. Every Marian festivity is a special day of prayer, floral offering, and rosary hour.

Devotion to the Twin Hearts began in the 17th century by St. Jean Eudes who organized its scriptural, theological, and liturgical sources, prior to St. Marguerite Alaconque’s vision of the Sacred Heart. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the devotions grew through the efforts of St. Louis de Montfort who promoted Catholic Mariology and St. Catherine Laboure who received the Miraculous Medal, showing the Heart of Jesus crowned with thorns and the Heart of Mary pierced with a sword. Devotions and associated prayers continued into the 20th century. The devotion to the Immaculate Heart became widely known when Our Lady of Fatima appeared six times (May 13-Oct. 16, 1917) to three children Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia, and asked them to propagate the devotion to the Blessed Mother and the Rosary.

NINTH DAY OF THE NOVENA to The Holy Ghost

Meditation: The Fruits of the Holy Ghost
The gifts of the Holy Ghost perfect the supernatural virtues by enabling us to practice them with greater docility to divine inspiration. As we grow in the knowledge and love of God under the direction of the Holy Ghost, our service becomes more sincere and generous, the practice of virtue more perfect. Such acts of virtue leave the heart filled with joy and consolation and are known as Fruits of the Holy Ghost. These Fruits in turn render the practice of virtue more attractive and become a powerful incentive for still greater efforts in the service of God, to serve Whom is to reign.

Prayer:

Meditation: The Gift of Wisdom
Embodying all the other gifts, as charity embraces all the other virtues, Wisdom is the most perfect of the gifts. Of wisdom it is written "all good things came to me with her, and innumerable riches through her hands." It is the gift of Wisdom that strengthens our faith, fortifies hope, perfects charity, and promotes the practice of virtue in the highest degree. Wisdom enlightens the mind to discern and relish things divine, in the appreciation of which earthly joys lose their savor, whilst the Cross of Christ yields a divine sweetness according to the words of the Savior: "Take up thy cross and follow me, for my yoke is sweet and my burden light.

Prayer:
Come, O Spirit of Wisdom, and reveal to my soul the mysteries of heavenly things, their exceeding greatness, power and beauty. Teach me to love them above and beyond all the passing joys and satisfactions of earth. Help me to attain them and possess them for ever. Amen.

Novena to the Holy Ghost: Day 7 - The Gift of Counsel

Heal our wounds--our strength renew;

Meditation: The Gift of Counsel
The gift of Counsel endows the soul with supernatural prudence, enabling it to judge promptly and rightly what must done, especially in difficult circumstances. Counsel applies the principles furnished by Knowledge and Understanding to the innumerable concrete cases that confront us in the course of our daily duty as parents, teachers, public servants, and Christian citizens. Counsel is supernatural common sense, a priceless treasure in the quest of salvation. "Above all these things, pray to the Most High, that He may direct thy way in truth."

Prayer:
Come, O Spirit of Counsel, help and guide me in all my ways, that I may always do Thy holy will. Incline my heart to that which is good; turn it away from all that is evil, and direct me by the straight path of Thy commandments to that goal of eternal life for which I long.

Novena to the Holy Ghost: Day 6 - The Gift of Understanding

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Meditation: The Gift of Understanding
Understanding, as a gift of the Holy Ghost, helps us to grasp the meaning of the truths of our holy religion BY faith we know them, but by Understanding we learn to appreciate and relish them. It enables us to penetrate the inner meaning of revealed truths and through them to be quickened to newness of life. Our faith ceases to be sterile and inactive, but inspires a mode of life that bears eloquent testimony to the faith that is in us; we begin to "walk worthy of God in all things pleasing, and increasing in the knowledge of God."

Prayer:
Come, O Spirit of Understanding, and enlighten our minds, that we may know and believe all the mysteries of salvation; and may merit at last to see the eternal light in Thy Light; and in the light of glory to have a clear vision of Thee and the Father and the Son. Amen.

Novena to the Holy Ghost: Day 5 - The Gift of Knowledge

Meditation: The Gift of Knowledge
The gift of Knowledge enables the soul to evaluate created things at their true worth--in their relation to God. Knowledge unmasks the pretense of creatures, reveals their emptiness, and points out their only true purpose as instruments in the service of God. It shows us the loving care of God even in adversity, and directs us to glorify Him in every circumstance of life. Guided by its light, we put first things first, and prize the friendship of God beyond all else. "Knowledge is a fountain of life to him that possesseth it."

Prayer:
Come, O Blessed Spirit of Knowledge, and grant that I may perceive the Will of the Father; show me the nothingness of earthly things, that I may realize their vanity and use them only for Thy glory and my own salvation, looking ever beyond them to Thee, and Thy eternal rewards. Amen.
